This summary guide, written by the COFREND Additive Manufacturing working group, is aimed at industrial NDT operators who do not yet have sufficient control over the processes of additive manufacturing. Its work focuses on the DED (Directed Energy Deposition) and PBF (Powder Bed Fusion) processes. The DED process includes wire arc.

VOLUME 1 lists the existing standards and those in preparation in the field of additive manufacturing and NDT: terminology, manufacturing processes, tests, qualification, acceptance criteria, defectology.

VOLUME 2 describes and compares the main AM processes and reviews the acceptance criteria and the quality approaches deployed by the manufacturers. The guide will include a composites section, written in conjunction with the COFREND Composites WG.

VOLUME 3 describes the main post-manufacturing NDT methods and techniques that can be used on finished parts and gives their field of application as well as their advantages and limitations. This volume will use the results of the round robin tests in progress on parts provided by the WG’s partners and will produce results on use cases. The tomography part will be the subject of joint work with the tomography WG.

VOLUME 4 reviews the points requiring attention to establish the inspection procedures (the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of the parts, depending on the AM processes). For the most appropriate NDT methods and techniques, it gives recommendations for the definition of a test procedure.

VOLUME 5 describes the capabilities of the NDT methods and techniques that are applicable online, and the possibilities offered by the monitoring of manufacturing processes.

Volume 1 consists of three chapters

Chapter 1 : a complete review of the state of the art of standardization and the proposals intended to speed up the production of ISO/ASTM standards dedicated to the NDT of metal parts produced by AM. These proposals consider the existing structure of ISO standardization for welding and casting. The standards that could act as a starting point were identified, as well as the development priorities. This work is being carried out in collaboration with UNM 920, which is the entity that represents France in the preparation of ISO/ASTM standards.

Chapter 2 : a proposal for the classification of the imperfections likely to be produced in wire arc DED.

Chapter 3 : a proposal for the classification of the imperfections likely to be produced in PBF.
